Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, secured their fifth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket championship title by overcoming Mali 78-64 in the final held on Sunday, August 3, at the Palais des Sports Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Mali and South Sudan go home with Silver and Bronze respectively after South Sudan achieved a significant upset in Women’s AfroBasket history by narrowly defeating 11-time champions Senegal, 66-65, in a closely contested match.
Mali began the match with an impressive performance, leading 26-20 at the conclusion of the first quarter. However, Nigeria asserted control throughout the subsequent three quarters, ultimately achieving a decisive victory over their West African counterparts and capturing a seventh continental championship.
By securing victory, Nigeria qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany. Mali, together with South Sudan and Senegal, will participate in the qualification tournaments next March for an opportunity to join them.
