The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has begun investigations into the Tuesday morning derailment of the passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna which resulted in several carriages overturning and causing concern among passengers. The incident took at Kilometer 49 between Kubwa and Asham Stations on Tuesday was at about 11:0 am, shortly after the train left Abuja heading towards Kaduna.
The derailment threw passengers into panic, forcing many to flee for safety, while eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying.
One passenger recounted that the train went off the tracks without warning, sparking confusion as people scrambled out of the affected cabins.
According to another passenger, people exited the train quickly following the derailment, but reports indicate that military personnel arrived at the scene to help evacuate the passengers.
In a statement, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) reports that six passengers were injured and there were no fatalities. The Bureau has sent a team to investigate the incident and gather evidence, interact with stakeholders, and begin investigating the circumstances that led to the derailment.
“The Bureau sympathizes with those injured and extends its support to all passengers affected. The investigation will focus on identifying the direct and underlying factors that led to the derailment, with the aim of issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence,” the statement read.
The Bureau assured that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
